Programs & Admission Information - Maceio, Brazil  


 

Programs

Both group and private instruction, from absolute beginners to advanced levels are offered. Courses focus on conversation, though there may be some writing requirements to be completed at home. Approximately 95% of class time is conducted in Portuguese. The textbook is excellent, and is developed at the University of Sao Paulo.

Classes can begin on any Monday for all levels of intermediate and advanced students, or one to two dates per month for beginners. Lessons are 50 minutes in duration with three or four 10 minute breaks taken. The content of the classes depends on the level of the student. Groups will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 students.

All programs are available at both locations with the exception of the Volunteer Program.

Standard Portuguese Program
20 hours per week. Students receive 4 lessons daily of group instruction, Monday through Friday. Classes are held Monday to Friday morning or afternoon. The program is offered for all levels, from beginner to advanced levels.

Intensive Portuguese Group
30 hours per week. Students receive 6 lessons daily of group instruction, Monday through Friday. Classes are held in the morning and afternoon. The program is offered for all levels, from beginner to advanced levels.

Private Portuguese Classes
20 hours per week. Lessons are held in the morning or afternoon. The program is offered for all levels, from beginner to advanced. The course can be adapted to the student's language needs.

Executive Portuguese Program
30 hours per week. The Executive Intensive Program includes 6 lessons per day of private instruction combined with business terminology for the working professional. Lessons are held in the morning and the afternoon. The course can be adapted to the student's language needs and includes lunch with the teacher. The program is offered for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

Private Classes
50 hours per week. The Super Intensive Private Tutor Program includes 10 lessons per day of private instruction combined with business terminology for the individual who wants to receive the greatest number and intensity of Portuguese lessons in a very limited amount of time. Lessons are held in the morning and the afternoon. The course can be adapted to the student's language needs and includes lunch with the teacher. Children & Family Options
We can accommodate families traveling with children. The following options are available:

• Toddlers receive supervision by trained nannies while parents are in class.
• Children 6 - 12 years of age are introduced to the Portuguese language through fun activities and games.
Classes are held at the school in classrooms, the multimedia room, and in the school's garden.
• Teens 12 - 16 follow program especially design for them and their interests and are also held at the school in classrooms,
the multimedia room, and in the school's garden.
• Young adults over 16 are included in the adult programs.


Study & Volunteer Program
This Study & Volunteer program in Maceio combines minimum 4 week Standard Group study program and minimum 4 week volunteer placement in the community for a total of 8 weeks minimum.

All opportunities will work in partnership with local people in a variety of community-based projects.

This unique program offers exciting hands-on volunteering opportunities, meaningful cultural immersion, and an enriching language program.

During the minimum 4 week Volunteer program, the students will volunteer with different organizations and projects.

There are several different projects students can choose to work on. Projects include the following:

Lar da Menina
Works as a shelter for at-risk girls who spend the whole week there.

Casa de adocao rubens colaco
An orphanage in Maceio for children sent by the State Department of Children and Juveniles.

Sociedade eunice weaver
Works with at-risk girls left in their care during the week.

Lar Sementes Do Amanha
Assists boys from 5 to 14 years old

Adefal
Works with handicapped kids, teenagers and adults

Lar Sao Francisco de Assis
Cares for about 70 senior citizens

Admissions & Academic Credit

Students age 18 years and older are welcomed regardless of educational background, occupation or nationality. Students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No previous knowledge of Portuguese is required except where otherwise indicated.

Please Note: Visa is required for entry into Brazil for U.S. citizens. Information on visas will be sent to student after Preregistration form is received. For those traveling from countries outside the U.S., please contact your nearest Brazilian consulate or embassy.

Students desiring credit for their study program should contact their home school or request the NRCSA Credit Fact Sheet. Generally, U.S. universities consider 15 hours of study to be equal to 1 semester credit.

MLI has arranged study programs for some U.S. colleges for which undergraduate or graduate credits has been given. The number of credits granted is determined by the length of stay and number of the classroom hours. Be sure to arrange the NRCSA Credit Option at least 60 days prior to your date of departure.

Certificates

Certificates of course completion are issued to those students who maintained regular attendance and who have complied with the requirements of the curriculum.
