SAN JOSE, the capital of Costa Rica, is home to several excellent museums and many of the country’s best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife options. The city’s other great assets are its location and mild climate as San José enjoys pleasant weather year round and stands in a broad fertile bowl ringed by jagged mountains, some of which are active volcanoes. Downtown, the grid-plan streets are lined with mirrored high-rises and elegant bungalows; in the affluent suburbs at the eastern and western ends of the city, middle-class Ticos (as Costa Ricans call themselves) tend their tidy gardens, while sprawling barrios stretch to the north and south.

THE SCHOOL You will be studying at the private language and culture school - Instituto Interamericano de Idiomas. The school is located in a quiet residential area only 10 minutes by bus from downtown. Students attend the institution from more than 20 different countries each year.

ABOUT YOUR HOST FAMILIES. During your stay you will live with Middle class Costa Rican families, most of whom have hosted foreign students as guests before. One to two students will live in each host family and two meals daily with your family will be provided.

THE TRIP is open to CSU and other Milwaukee area students and faculty.

OF SPECIAL INTEREST... Costa Rica is a small country rich in natural wonders and biodiversity. There are miles of beaches bordering both oceans, jungle rivers for rafting and kayaking, and spectacular rain forests for bird watching, hiking, and exploring the diverse flora and fauna. Transportation is inexpensive. Optional excursions are available to all major areas of interest. Possibilities include: a weekend on a warm tropical beach, a two day boating trip through a jungle rain forest, a trek up into volcano country, art and handicraft exhibits, a jungle train ride, deep sea or river fishing, theater, concerts, sports and shopping.
