Lodging & Arrival Information - Cuenca, Ecuador

Lodging

Homestays Living with an Ecuadorian family allows the student to integrate him or herself into local everyday life and practice their Spanish in different situations. The school has chosen upper-middle class families which will welcome the student as if he or she were another member of the family. The student will have a single room, at times with a private bathroom, and will eat the three main meals of the day with the family.

Other Accommodations For those students who wish to live independently, reservations in several local hotels are available. All hotel accommodations offer reasonable comfort, cleanliness and service conditions required for a long stay. This option is available upon request and may be at additional cost depending on hotel type:
  •   Hotel: Simple, very clean, centrally located, private bath, TV, telephone, restaurant.
  •   Hotel: Very comfortable, welcoming, private bath, TV, telephone, etc.
  •   Hotel: Luxury, all services.

General Travel Tips
* What you pack is important. Don't forget to take rain gear, comfortable shoes, and a warm coat for the heights.
* Be sure to have travel insurance, such as MONDIAL ASSISTANCE or another similar type (in addition to insurance included in programs offered by NRCSA).
* Ecuadorian authorities do NOT require a VISA for the citizens of many countries. If you are not sure, consult the nearest Ecuadorian Embassy.
* No special vaccinations are required, but you may wish to consult your doctor.
* Banks and Money Exchanges exchange Euros, Japanese Yen, etc. but we recommend taking travelers cheques in Dollars. These are accepted everywhere. You may also wish to take a few small bills, also in Dollars.
* Some prices in Cuenca: Dinner for two in a good restaurant, 25 US$. 10 bus tickets, 1 US$. Fruit juice in the best coffee shop 1 US$.
* Film, batteries, cassettes, etc. are easy to find.
* Don't hesitate to buy a good Ecuador Travel Guide before setting out.
* Letters between Ecuador and Europe/USA take from 7 to 12 days.
* VISA, MASTERCARD and AMERICAN EXPRESS credit cards are quite common and accepted at many establishments.

Arrival Information

Transfer from Quito or Guayaquil to Cuenca Travelers to Cuenca must first transit through either the Quito or Guayaquil airports to travel to Cuenca. The ticket from Quito or Guayaquil to Cuenca must be purchased inside Ecuador. If you are interested in avoiding the hassles associated with procuring your own air ticket to Cuenca, please advise NRCSA on your registration form. The center will acquire the Quito/Guayaquil-Cuenca air ticket when advised of your flight arrival information into either Quito or Guayaquil (please advise NRCSA of this information at least 3 weeks prior to arrival in Quito or Guayaquil). School personnel will meet each student after the Quito or Guayaquil Airport Customs and Passport Control area and transport the student to a comfortable hotel that serves a complementary continental breakfast the following morning. The representative will then pick the student up from the hotel the following morning, transport them to the domestic section of the appropriate airport, and provide the air ticket necessary to fly to Cuenca. Upon arrival in Cuenca, the student will be picked up at the airport by a school representative, and dropped off at the homestay. This service is not mandatory, and if you would like to arrange these flights on your own, please feel free to do so. Lodging information is sent 7-14 days prior to departure.
